Which Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine Is The Most Reliable? | HotCars

>

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the staple vehicles of the SUV revolution. It, along with other bestsellers like the Ford Explorer and Toyota 4Runner, grew to massive popularity through the early 1990s and beyond, and the current model still sells in healthy numbers.

Since its introduction in 1993, the Grand Cherokee has had its fair share of options, special editions, and crucially, powerplants. Chrysler used the Grand Cherokee as a premium-level vehicle through which it could launch new engines, or re-position an older engine with new upgrades as a “premium option” over base engines.

But which one was best? The current Grand Cherokee has been subject to a few drivetrain-related recalls recently, but throughout its history it must, surely, have had some seriously robust motors under its hood. This is a true dual-purpose on- and off-road vehicle – a “real SUV” if you will – and back when it launched, engines (and cars, by extension) were much simpler, therefore generally more reliable.

Of all the straight-6, V6, V8 and turbodiesel engines offered in the Grand Cherokee throughout its history, which one was the toughest motor?

You might have heard of an automotive recall scandal called “Dieselgate.” It involved Volkswagen’s turbodiesel engines using a cheat device to falsify their emissions during testing. No big deal, it only cost them a barely comprehensible $33.6 billion, the jobs of a few executives, and ended all VW diesel sales in North America.

A similar situation also affected Fiat-Chrysler’s “EcoDiesel” 3.0l V6 turbodiesels. It cost them an estimated $800 million, and FCA still has an active settlement for owners of affected Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokees from 2014 to 2016. However, skewed emissions figures was only one part in a series of problems that affected early versions of the VM Motori-built engine.

These engines also had issues with EGR regulators, leading to another recall for fire risks. So far only the EcoDiesel-equipped Ram 1500 models have been recalled, but there are yet more issues which plague these motors that affect both Rams and Jeeps. They had problems with cam gear slippage, which could lead to catastrophic engine failure. Fortunately, for 2020 onwards, FCA will use a revised and much improved version of the 3.0l V6, hopefully reducing reliability concerns.

It’s also worth mentioning that these 2014-2015 Grand Cherokees were part of the e-shifter recall, to replace electronic gear selectors that wouldn’t always properly engage Park, leading to over 120 accidents, including one which killed Russian actor, Anton Yelchin.

The previous generation Grand Cherokee (2005-2010) also had a diesel engine option, in this case a 3.0l V6
