Now, more so than ever before, it feels as if JDM sports cars have become more and more exotic to the general masses. Though they may have began life as affordable, unassuming Japanese sports cars, they’ve rapidly evolved into highly valued collectible items (as well as rolling works of art).
There are a litany of Japanese sports cars that would fall under this umbrella. For example: classics like the Toyota Supra, Nissan GT-R, Honda NSX, and Mazda RX-7. All relatively expensive, some greater than others.
Out of these ‘Kings of Japan’ in the JDM world, we’re focused on just one today: the Mazda RX-7. Not just any RX-7 either, but the greatest body style ever put onto one, too. Of course, we mean the RX-7 FD3S!
If this is among your list of ‘dream cars’, it can be hard to keep track of the ever-changing prices for these rare toys, given how much the markets fluctuate.
The Mazda RX-7 is a Japanese sports car that really is unlike any other in the world. It has a rich history stretching as far back as the late 1970s (with the first generation, ‘SA22C’). In the fourteen-years after the first Mazda RX-7 rolled out of the factory, the company had made waves in engineering and customer satisfaction – Giving the driver every option they could possibly want. Specifically, a rotary engine.
As James from Donut Media recently put it, “it would be impossible to discuss the RX-7 without talking about its engine.” We’re inclined to agree, as it was one of the biggest selling points for Mazda and their RX-7/RX-8.
The Mazda RX-7 FD’s rotary engine is the complete opposite of the standard piston setup found in most cars. Rather than creating combustion by means of pistons pressurizing air and a spark, a Rotary engine uses a rotor to do the same. Essentially, a Doritos shaped rotor spins around inside the engine; creating Sparks wherever the corners hit.
Rotary engines are certainly a unique and beloved take on the standard combustion engine. So much so, in fact, that it’s led to a cult following of sorts surrounding both the Mazda RX-7 and rotary engines as a whole. Ever since the Mazda’s RX line’s discontinuation, fans have been thirsting for another one.

Because of the aforementioned demand and love for the ol’ RX-7’s, they’ve become less of an affordable sports car and more of a high-end toy. So, as the laws of supply and demand dictate, prices are inevitably going to rise as a result. Tons of buyers and not much product equals upward pressure on costs.
Though it pains us so, the automotive industry isn’t among those rare fields
