Watch A Porsche Taycan Take On A Tesla Model S…In The Rain!

By now, just about everyone who pays any attention to the automotive marketplace knows that electric vehicles offer some of the best straight-line acceleration much more easily than internal-combustion cars that can cost many times as much money. Thanks to all-wheel-drive traction and the instantaneously available torque of electric motors, even large vehicles like the Porsche Taycan Turbo and Tesla Model S can hold their own against legit supercars. But what happens when these two premier drag racers go up against each other on a wet track? Well, one YouTube channel set out to test just that in a new video featuring a Porsche once again challenging a Tesla.

The cars in question here, more specifically, are a Porsche Taycan Turbo (critically, not the Turbo S that dominated Motortrend’s quarter-mile record books) and a four-year-old Tesla Model S P90D, which has a smaller battery pack and correspondingly worse performance when compared to newer variants like the Model S Performance.

So these aren’t the latest and greatest models, to be fair, but they both should still be pretty impressive, with Porsche claiming that the Taycan Turbo can log a 3.0-second sprint to 60 miles per hour with launch control engaged and the P90D having been the first four-door vehicle in history to crack the three-second range.

Critically, the Porsche employs two forward gears, while the Tesla only has one. But all the stats and specs in the world need to be tested in real-world conditions—and conditions for drag racing don’t get much worse than a rainy wet track. Tires might be the single most important factor in the clip, though in the end, the Porsche’s advantages at higher speeds come into play after both all-wheel-drive EVs manage surprisingly good launches despite the slippery situation.
