The Real Reason Lift Kits Are So Popular | HotCars

>

Lifting a pickup truck has its pros and cons. It’s not smart to get a lift kit for any purpose, but for special circumstances, it makes a whole lot of sense. Gone are the days where people lift their trucks just to “look cool.” Now, people are doing it for practical reasons, and we’ll get into that.

Lift kits are extremely popular among truck drivers. There are a whole lot of reasons why it’s a good idea and a few reasons why it’s not. But the most common things can expect from a lift are pretty self-evident when looking at one: bigger wheels and tires; an aggressive stance; more visibility; easier towing; not getting stuck (because of the bigger tires).

Let’s check out why lift kits are so popular, and how they’re not just a fashion statement anymore. We’ll also see when lifting became popular, for a little history lesson that most people probably have no clue about.

When people see a lifted truck—or in the past when people would see one on the road—they would usually think the driver was some inexperienced teenager trying to look cool and mean to everyone else. While that might have been the case once upon a time, nowadays, more and more people are lifting their trucks for practical reasons.

The most common reasons people lift their trucks are to get better visibility on the road (which makes a whole lot of sense), and for easier towing. People also like the aggressive stance, of course.

Now, if you’re using your truck primarily for highway driving or in the city, Auto Influence points out that there’s no real benefit for more ground clearance, and in fact, it may hurt your performance. But lifting provides huge advantages for off-road usage, such as a greater approach, breakover, and departure angles. Taller tires also get the differential higher off the ground, which reduces the risk of damage from obstacles and reduces the risk of getting stuck, while all four wheels gain maximum traction due to the lifted truck.

Visibility is obviously greatly improved, and now you can see further down the road and over other vehicles. That means fewer accidents. You’ll also be standing out more to other people, so if they would’ve missed you in their blind spot before, they won’t now. This all equals fewer chances of accidents, which is a very good thing.

Contrary to popular belief that lift kits became popular with teenagers during the ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s, to look like badasses, the practice actually dates back WAY further than that. Try… World War II!

The Dodge Power Wagon was inspired by vehicles used in WWII, and
